In partnership with Allen's Legal, Communicare's Everyday Elves Workshop (EEW) has just completed a successful campaign to boost social inclusion through sports.
EEW aims to get more children participating in physical activity regardless of their background, and after consultation with stakeholders, it was identified that this first campaign would focus on the children in our Settle In and Family Support Network program.
The sponsorship by Allen's Legal provided 91 children with sporting equipment of their choice and ten families with sporting registration fees.
Sports can create inclusive spaces in society, no matter what age a child is or whether they are able-bodied or disabled. It also doesn't discriminate against children regardless of their religion, ethnicity or socio-economic status.
In fact, social inclusion is considered an important determinant of health that contributes to positive wellbeing in all aspects of life.
Without inclusion, people are more likely to experience poor mental and physical health, including feelings of loneliness, isolation, and low self-esteem.
Unfortunately, the cost of sports registration, uniforms and sporting equipment has grown exponentially which means more West Australian children are financially excluded from participating.
This campaign provided children with an opportunity to socialise with one another and uncover their hidden talents.
We would like to acknowledge the team at Kmart Carousel who continue to support our initiatives by purchasing, discounting, and delivering items.
Thank you to Lesley Lord and our wonderful volunteers Sandra and Irene for sorting the equipment and making the process very smooth.
Keep an eye out for our next initiative which will be focusing on 2021 National Book Week!
