Anti-Poverty Week (Sunday 14 October to Saturday 20 October 2018) aims to increase our understanding of the issue of poverty and how to make a difference. This year, Communicare’s Executive Director Service Delivery and Design, David Cain was the state co-chair for the initiative alongside Jo Sadler, State Director of Mission Australia.
Poverty in Australia remains an issue of major concern, and this is very relevant to our organisation as we are deeply committed to improving the life opportunities of vulnerable children and young people. Poverty impacts not only adults of today, but the adults of the future.
Children growing up in poverty miss out on school excursions, birthday parties, extracurricular activities and new school uniforms and books. They experience insufficient daily meals, inadequate nutrition, lack of confidence and irregular health check-ups. They miss out on the right to gain the quality education they deserve. Their life opportunities diminish, performing poorly on a range of health, social and economic indicators into adulthood.
We encouraged our staff to discuss this community challenge across our 35+ sites as well as with their own family and social groups to do what they can to advocate for those families, children and young people facing financial hardship in our community today.
