During term four of the 2019 school term, our Communicare Academy students experienced the benefits of Art Therapy through an interactive course delivered by our Family and Relationships Services program.
The art session focussed on helping students, who primarily struggle with anxiety and anger, to find creative ways in not only dealing with negative thoughts and emotions but overcoming them.
Six students were taken on a four week journey through the world of art to identify their strengths and weaknesses, resources available to them as well as forms of self-regulation in times they are most susceptible.
Despite reluctances at the start of the sessions, the students uncovered more about themselves through the creative activities and were happy to share their work amongst others in their groups.
In collaboration with our school Social Worker and Psychologist, our students were fully supported and comforted in a fun and safe environment - making it easier for them to participate and talk about some difficult topics.
Here's what a few of them had to say:
"I liked talking about what's going on. It is hard but if you keep trying and not give up, you can do anything."
"I like using the paints and art supplies. I also liked getting the chance to draw again."
"We went over what we can and can't control in lives. It was pretty hard to swallow so I didn't like it quite as much as the other sessions but it was something I needed to do."
Another great example of the power of collaboration between our services to maximise postive outcomes for our students.
