On Tuesday, 22 October Communicare, in collaboration with the City of Gosnells, Centrecare and Parkerville Child and Parent Centres, presented a ‘Parenting the Whole Child’ event for Perth parents.
Over 70 parents attended and were involved in a very interactive Q&A session which focused on the social and emotional development of their children with a focus on anxiety, the importance of physical play and managing children’s screen time.
Some of the key take away messages parents were able to take home from the night included;
- Statistics tell us there are 1500 photos of our children on Facebook by the time they are 5 years old!
- Nature Play is in our environment – it is all around us and it’s free (not a built playground of natural materials).
- Understanding a child’s temperament is really important in how we parent
- The structures and interacting areas of the limbic system are involved in motivation, emotion, learning, and memory. It controls some behaviours that are essential. We either go into the fight, flight, freeze or fawn stage. No amount of shouting is going to achieve a change in behaviour.
Parents who were unable to attend the can still can access information through the online resource links below or for further information on Communicare’s parenting programs please contact Parenting & Family Services on 9251 5777.
