Communicare's Jobs and Skills – Work Readiness program student Cobey has secured a highly competitive and sought-after culinary apprenticeship with one of Perth's award-winning restaurant, Rockpool Bar & Grill.

The 18-year-old applied for the role while completing our Work Readiness program – a 10-week intensive course in which students are supported to attain a Certificate II in General Education for Adults (CGEA). This qualification provides a range of educational opportunities for young people to increase their participation in the community and the workplace.

Cobey's interests in pursuing a culinary career motivated him to enrol in our Work Readiness program, which helped him in gaining an insight into industry qualifications and in learning hands-on skills such as writing application letters and preparing for job interviews.

Last year, Cobey was successful in applying for a traineeship. Unfortunately, like many other challenges with COVID-19, Cobey was unable to access his traineeship due to course cancellations following government restrictions. Despite this obstacle, Cobey joined our program this year and was determined to not let even a pandemic stand in his way of pursuing his goals.

Communicare's Training and Development Officer, Nicky Young, who facilitated the program at the time, commended Cobey on his positive attitude and keenness to succeed.

"His determination was an example to others in the room and he didn't let anything stand in his way."

Rockpool Bar & Grill is a prestigious restaurant group which sets a world-class stage for young aspiring chefs like Cobey. As an apprentice chef, Cobey will work alongside professional chefs assisting in all aspects of food preparation and presentation. The apprenticeship program will provide Cobey with the opportunity to learn and build experience not only in a commercial kitchen environment, but also in the industry, giving him confidence, knowledge and skills needed to pursue a career in hospitality.

The team at Communicare RTO and the wider Communicare community are excited to watch Cobey's career with great interest and wishes Cobey the very best for his new adventure.
