Jamilla* was referred to Communicare’s Settle In program in 2019 under a Temporary Partner Visa. At the time she was being subjected to increasing physical violence and emotional abuse by her partner.

Despite the threat of having her visa cancelled, Jamilla found the courage to flee the relationship. Her ex-partner advised the government the relationship had ended, and she was terrified that she would face deportation. Jamilla was not eligible for Centrelink payments and couldn’t afford her living expenses. With no support group, no social network, and no idea what services she could turn to for help, the situation felt hopeless.

Communicare, in partnership with a range of partner agencies, helped Jamilla to navigate the Visa process, connect with legal services and receive a special benefit from Centrelink. Jamilla was then able to find a job as a FIFO worker.

In May of 2020, Jamilla’s Permanent Resident Visa was approved. After the violence, abuse and stress Jamilla had faced, she was finally able to relax.
