“Our vision for reconciliation is a society that values the cultures and heritage of our First Nations Peoples, respects the land and waters, and provides justice and equity to all Australians.” – Communicare Reconciliation Action Plan
Communicare is committed to working with First Nations Peoples to Close the Gap with the wider Australian community and engage in opportunities to create equality for all.
Since the launch of our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in 2018, followed by our Innovate RAP in 2021, we’ve been focussed on growing relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities and organisations.
National Close the Gap Day on March 17 is an opportunity for all Australians to send all levels of government a clear message that our nation values health equality as a fundamental right.
Since being launched in 2007, National Close the Gap Day has brought people together from all over the country to advocate for and take meaningful action to create better and more equitable health outcomes for First Nations Peoples.
The life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is 10–17 years lower than that of non-indigenous Australians. Aboriginal people are still dying from Rheumatic Heart Disease, an illness almost entirely consigned to third world countries.
In addition, a recent report showed that Aboriginal children presenting to Emergency Departments were more likely to be critically unwell and need urgent care than non-Aboriginal children.
As an organisation committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children and young people, these findings are completely unacceptable.
Along with lack of access to healthcare, other factors impacting the well-being of First Nations People include poverty, education, and employment. Action must be taken across all these areas to raise standards of living and close the gap.
While many Australians enjoy one of the highest life expectancies and qualities of life in the world, the same isn’t true across all ethnic and cultural groups. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people face barriers in accessing the health services and resources they need to stay healthy and thrive.
As an organisation with a workforce and client-base comprising people from all corners of the world, we embrace the call for fairness, inclusivity and equity for all Australians. We encourage you to show your support by signing the Close the Gap pledge and asking your friends and colleagues to do the same.
This includes our ongoing commitment to meeting the aspirations of our Innovate RAP and supporting First Nations communities on whose lands and waterways we live and work.
