This program engages with men who have used violence, putting supports in place for them to learn new behaviours, as well as develop a personalised action plan.
The Choose Change Family Domestic Violence Response Teams (FDVRT) program runs across five locations in a collaborative approach with the Department of Communities, Family Domestic Violence Response Teams (FDVRT) and in partnership with women’s safety services.
Referrals for the program come through the co-located FDVRT’s in Bunbury, Fremantle, Midland, Joondalup, and Northam. This program engages with men who have used violence and abuse within their intimate and/or family relationships, putting supports in place for them to learn healthier behaviours, as well as develop a personalised action plan in response to identified risks. The program’s focus is to increase the safety of those affected by the man’s use of violence and abuse. To achieve this, we work closely with partner agencies to ensure risks are understood and addressed.
The Choose Change FDVRT program provides strategies and techniques to assist men in developing an increased understanding of how their use of violence and abuse impacts others. The program aims to improve the wellbeing of partners and families by supporting men to build safer, more respectful relationships through nonviolent behaviour. As a part of the case management approach, referrals can be made to other service providers in order to support engaged participants in addressing needs, and challenges in areas other than FDV
Program Overview
The Choose Change FDVRT program includes seven module‑based sessions delivered one‑on‑one with a trained facilitator. Each session runs for one hour and focuses on brief‑intervention behaviour change. Before starting, participants complete an assessment to make sure the program is the right fit for their needs and circumstances.
The program is built on the understanding that Family and Domestic Violence is an abuse of power and control. Throughout the modules, participants are supported to explore their abusive behaviours, develop an understanding of the impact of their actions on others, and learn how to build safe, respectful, and healthy relationships.
Choose Change FDVRT provides practical tools, referrals, guided reflection, and tailored support to help men make meaningful changes, reduce harm, and strengthen the safety and wellbeing of partners, families, and the wider community.
